the devastation of hurricane sandy, stories of heroism are coming out of the wordwo woodwork. tonight, one of the nurses who helped save the lives of four babies during the hurricane. >>> good to have you with us tonight, folks. thanks for watching. residents on the east coast are trying to get their lives back as the cleanup and recovery from sandy continues. thousands of commuters lined up in brooklyn for free buses into manhattan today. of course, getting to the bus was only half the battle. traffic is still tied up in knots. new york mayor, new york's three major airports reopened. this was the first flight to land at laguardia since the storm hit. cars lined up for miles along the new jersey highway to get gasoline. governor chris christie says officials requested emergency supplies of gasoline and fuel from the federal government. there have been 92 reported deaths related to this storm in the united states. the department of energy says more than 4 million customers still have no power. nearly 2 million of those households are in the state of new jersey. utility workers are coming i

're following this hour, slow pace of storm recovery efforts in the northeast. 12 days after sandy, some residents saying they are not receiving any help from fema or even the red cross. with such widespread devastation residents are dealing without basic services. that before the storm they took for granted. >> no water. no heat. no lights, garbage not being picked up. garbage, halfway. garbage thrown everywhere. smell. the environment out here is terrible as far as smelling. odor is horrendous. it's depressing. >> gregg: anna is covering this live at staten island. >> we are 300 yards from the water at one of six dumping stations around staten island. we have been watching this debris pile up for two weeks in the nor'easter that hit last week. it did slow the crews. it's quite an active scene behind me today. a sign of progress being made. that is good sign. also hundreds of volunteers piled into buses at city hall this morning with their own tools and shovels helping out super storm sandy victims. volunteers sorting goods going house to house and cleaning up parks. groups are leaving

. >> at least i got you talking about sandy. let's go to the news. on the eve of the presidential election -- today marks one full week since the hurricane came ashore. and the hurricane, at least at this point, killed at least 110 people. leaving a path of destruction that reshaped entire stretches of the northeast coastline. the cover of "new york" magazine shows the breadth of the impact on manhattan alone. much of the southern half of the island in pitch black. this morning nearly 1 million people in new jersey remain without power or heat. as overnight temperatures dip near freezing. as cold weather sets in, new york city mayor michael bloomberg says as many as 40,000 people may need to find new places to live. that is a daunting task for a city known for its already tight housing market. the announcement set up the potential return of fema trailers like those used in the wake of hurricane katrina. gas lines hours long stretched through the weekend across the tri-state area. in some cases stations are now using gas-powered generators to pump the fuel out of the ground. new york govern

york and new jersey. in the aftermath of hurricane sandy drivers that can actually find an open gas station have to deal with lines that stretch for miles and miles and sometimes, when they finally get to that gas station, they run out of gas. so you've got folks sitting in those lines and you've got gas in the storage tanks and in the pipelines and in the tankers across the northeast but in many cases the company can not, for power reasons, get that gasoline distributed to the places where it needs to go. 60% of the gas stations in new jersey are closed. i also heard numbers as high as 80%. 70% of the stations in long island are closed. think about that. that's a huge percentage of the gas stations in both of these highly populated states that are not even open for business. so it is a really, really tough situation out there. for those lucky enough to get to the pump, actually paying for their gas is another concern. >> i just spent $30,000 getting my home repaired and it is all gone. >> we have nothing. no credit cards. nothing in our bank accounts. $15 in my pocket. nowhere to g
